Seton Hill University, also known as simply SHU, is a small Catholic liberal arts university located in Greensburg, which is the county seat of Westmoreland County, situated in the US state of Pennsylvania, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 16 000 inhabitants. Greensburg is a major business and cultural center, and therefore, it doubles its population, during work hours.
Seton Hill was founded in 1885, by the Sisters of Charity and it is named after Elizabeth Ann Seton, founder of the Sisters of Charity, who was canonized as USA's first native-born saint. The Sisters of Charity opened Seton Hill Junior college, in 1914, which, with the approval of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, became Seton Hill College 4 years later. The institution officially achieved university status in 2002, from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Seton Hill's athletic teams are known as the Griffins. Their distinctive colors are crimson and gold, and their mascot is, obviously, the Griffin.
The sports in which the Griffins compete, include: softball, basketball, cross country, cheerleading, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf and vollayball.
Justice Maureen O'Connor - 6th woman to have served as an Ohio Supreme Court justice, Dr. Patricia Gabow - chief or renal disease at Denver General Hospital in 1973, and Michelle Moore Ridge - former First Lady of Pennsylvania are Seton Hill's noteworthy alumni.
